Yin Yoga Series
with Ruby Alcartado

Fridays, Jan 6, thru Jan 27, Feb 3 thru Feb 24: 4:30 - 5:45 pm

In these classes we will focus on stretching and stimulating the connective tissue, in the pelvis, hips, lower back and spine. These are the areas of the body that can create difficulties as we age. Yin Yoga is a restorative practice where postures are held gently, for three or more minutes. Yin Yoga is done primarily on the floor or at the wall while the body is being supported with blankets and props, as needed. The long, meditative holds of Yin Yoga deeply calms the nervous system, quiets the mind, and gently releases muscle and connective tissues surrounding bones, ligaments, and joints. With a consistent and safe practice, Yin Yoga can reduce joint stiffness, increase mobility and body awareness, quiet the mind, and access the “rest and digest” parasympathetic nervous system resulting in a grounding, calming, and an energizing sense of rejuvenation. Additionally, on every fourth Friday of the series, Ruby will offer an extended period of Yoga Nidra. Yoga nidra is among the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness.

These 4 weeks series are designed for people with physical challenges, who are seeking a slower paced Yoga practice. The classes are also valuable for teachers looking for alternative poses for their students that may require them. Using a chair to explore the variations of many poses, students will gain personal body awareness through poses individualized for each student. This series will focus on yoga poses intended to improve balance, strength and flexibility. Each class will also include a brief meditation and breath awareness techniques.

The Eight Petals of Yoga with Brian Hogencamp

In this extended class, there will be asana, pranayama, and the art of sitting for dhyana (meditation). Practical philosophical infusions from B.K.S. Exploring 2 Energizing Inversions: Adho Mukha Vrksasana & Pincha Mayurasana with Susan Mettel

In this 2 hour energizing workshop we will work on the strength, flexibility and stability required for Adho Mukha Vrksasana (handstand) and Pincha Mayurasana (forearm balance). We will generate some tapas (heat) in both mind and body as we explore these 2 strong asanas. This class is suitable for students with one year of yoga experience and is interested in exploring these asanas more deeply. It is powerful to look at life upside down - come join the fun !

Ayurvedic Cleanse & Restorative Renewal with Teri Adolfo , Marla McMahon and Ruby Alcartado

A Four Hour Spring mini-retreat for balancing of body & mind wellness. Ayurveda and Yoga are sister sciences that have been practiced for thousands of years to bring balance to the body, mind, and consciousness. In this Spring workshop Teri Adolfo, a visiting Ayurveda practitioner and instructor from Sebastopol, will demonstrate the basic foundations of Ayurveda; as you learn to evaluate your prakruti (original constitution), and vikruti (present constitutional imbalance). Teri will share some of Ayurveda's most cherished self care routines. these include dietary recommendations, cleansing techniques and daily routines. Following an Ayurveda presentation and cleansing snack, Ruby Alcartado and Marla McMahon will guide you through a series of relaxing yin and restorative asanas (poses) that will be held from 3-8 minutes to help deeply relax the body. The day will end with the yoga nidra practice of total body relaxation, meditation, pranayama (breath work) and guided visualization. Essential oils will be used during the restorative poses to deepen the relaxation.

Knowing the Ropes with Gary Vercelli and Yvonne Shanks

Sunday May 7, 2017, 2:00 - 5:00 pm

In this three hour workshop you’ll learn how working with ropes enhances arm stretches, standing poses, forward extension, seated postures, backbends, and inversions. Wall ropes are used to make students more aware of their alignment, and to help open areas of the body that might be difficult for them to reach without the use of the ropes. You can also use them in special therapeutic situations, where students need extra support for reasons such as disabilities, injuries, medical issues, etc. Ropes can also be used to stretch and strengthen very specific areas of the body. In standing poses, rope work takes the load off of the lumbar area. This class is suited to anyone with one year of yoga experience and will be limited to 20 students.

Upward Facing Bow. Sat. 2 - 4:30 pm
When the word back-bend is mentioned, this is the pose that tends to come to mind. You can experience the JOY of this asana by practicing the appropriate opening and stabilizing poses beforehand. The session will close with cooling and neutralizing poses.

Pranayama. Sunday: 10:45 - 11:45 am
The practice of Savasana, supine and seated pranayama will be covered

Variations on Tadasana Sunday: 12:15 - 2:45 p.m.
Tadasana or mountain pose is the foundational standing pose. Janet will teach a variety of standings using the structure of Tadasana to inform them.
